You will need 2 things to determine the age of your piano:
Piano serial numbers usually have five to seven digits, but may have fewer or more, depending on the manufacturer and age of your piano. Serial numbers may also include a letter as well. Here are the TOP FIVE places to locate the serial number of your spinet, console, or upright piano: Serial number locations are found: 1) On the piano’s cast.
1. The brand name of the piano.
- 7560 - Knabe Baby Grand Piano Knabe, Baltimore7560 - Knabe Baby Grand Piano Knabe, Baltimore MD, baby grand piano, serial # 99937. A Baldwin Black Lacquer Baby Grand Piano. - Mar 26, 2006 Unfortunatly, with the camera we have, this is as good as it gets. The imprinted plate reads as follows; 1st line= '87', 2nd line= 'Baldwin', 3rd line= appears to be a partial piano keyboard, 4th line= 'TWO (2) JEWELS', 5th line= 'UNADJUSTED', 6th line= 'MADE IN WEST GERMANY', 7th line= '1050-20'. Thanks for all your help.
Note: Some pianos will have more than one name for the manufacturer. For example: 'Hamilton' by Baldwin or 'Cable Nelson' by Everett. To make sure that you have all of the information you will need, open the lid of your piano and check out the name or names engraved or printed on the plate. Do NOT trust the name on the outside of the piano since in could have been refinished and a different name added.
2. The serial number (NOT the model number) of the piano.
To locate the serial number on a vertical piano, open the top and look inside. Almost all of them include the serial number on the plate in a small 'window' near the tuning pins. The number will usually be a 4 to 7 digit number, but may include a letter or two. If you can't locate it here, look inside to the far left or far right as some manufacturers attach it there on a small piece of metal. It may be stamped in the wood under the lid, or as a last resort, pull the piano away from the wall and look on the back.
To locate the serial number on a grand piano, take the music desk off. It's usually stamped on the pinblock here. Also look on the soundboard, many of the manufacturers will include it inside one of the 'windows' in the plate.
After you have located the manufacturer's name and the serial number, you have two options.

Howard Pianos History
Established in 1895, the Howard Piano company began as a piano manufacturer in Cincinnati, Ohio. Often confused with R.S. Howard pianos, the Howard Piano Company was a subsidiary of Baldwin Piano Co. In 1959, Baldwin began making in-home organs with the “Howard” name. [1]
By 1960, many of the grand pianos were made by Kawai and later Samick. When Gibson Guitar purchased the Baldwin Piano Co., the Howard name was also acquired and used for some pianos produced after 2001.

The Howard pianos were offered as a more affordable option to some of the expensive and higher-end Baldwin pianos. Still known as a reliable and durable piano, many Howard pianos can be found in relatively good condition today. [2]
